Kunming, the capital of China's Yunnan province, was the gateway to the famous Silk Road that brought such wealth and prosperity to the land. There are many small villages and towns further around the lake from Kunming and these are excellent places to see local customs and pick up some locally made crafts as souvenirs. Batik is a highly skilled method of dying cloth using wax to create patterns and sometimes highly detailed pictures. Daguan Park, meaning the Grand View, is on the shores of the Dianchi Lake. Within the Park are wonderful attractions like the Daguan Pavilion. The landscape is as lovely as any to be found in China and bonsais, porches, tree formations and rockeries all add up to make a calming and tranquil setting.
Those seeking cultural pursuits will be delighted with the breadth of activities available. Many dance forms exist in Kunming and visitors can see the Peacock Dance, Dongba Dance, Elephant-Foot Drum Dance and Dage Dance. Kunming also has an acclaimed symphony orchestra performing each month. The Yunan Provincial Museum has a collection of rare Dian bronzes more than 2,000 years old. These were excavated from tombs on the shores of Dian Chi. There are also fascinating replicas of imperial gold seals. China is famous for its porcelain and the museum has an interesting collection. The City Museum has the Dali Sutra Pillar as its chief exhibit which is a sculpture dating from the Song Dynasty.
